Beacon Copy Bonfire - May 1937.jpg - Long Preston Beacon Copy Bonfire on 12th May 1937 This photo is of the village bonfire which was built on “Beacon Copy” and set alight during the Coronation celebrations on May 12 1937. Left to right are: Williamina, James, Betty and Geoffrey Parkington. Williamina (1868-1949) and James (1870-1945) were Geoffrey’s grandparents, who lived on The Concrete until they died. Betty (1901-1960) was Geoff’s mother, similarly resident there until her death. Geoffrey’s father Donald was an LMS loco driver and he died in 1976, in Skipton it is thought. The photo has been supplied by Mike Howarth – originally from Settle, but now living in Ingleton after a lifetime working away in deepest Lancashire. He is scanning his family’s extensive photographic archive and shown above is one from his late Uncle Geoffrey Parkington’s collection. Geoff (1930-1996) lived in Long Preston before marrying Mike Howarth's aunt, Mildred Tomlinson in 1955 ( Tomlinsons are of Wigglesworth ancestry previous to Long Preston and then Settle ).
